Our Heritage

A Legacy Written in the Land

In 1890, Benjamin DeSpain homesteaded a piece of land when Benjamin Harrison was President just outside Edwall, Washington. He purchased more from the Northern Pacific Railway which still runs today right through the middle of the homestead. He couldn't have known then that his family would still be working this same ground more than a century later.

Preserving the 31 Quarter Circle brand begins with stewardship. DeSpain's cattle graze on Eastern Washington land that is some of the best naturally sub-irrigated land around. Using a continuous grazing system where cattle are rotated in and out of paddocks, and grazing after hay has been harvested allows natural fertilizer to be put back into the ground for the next growing season.

Today, Jeremy DeSpain carries that promise forward as the fifth generation steward of land trying to preserve it for the next generation.
